I’m one of those people who likes to ease my way into the day. Often that means waking up early, pouring a cup of coffee, curling up on the couch, and journaling for a bit. I let my rescue pup, Lenny, outside and have a few quiet moments to myself.

Because the days are getting shorter and it was still dark outside, I turned on my small LED tree this morning. It was the only light in the room, and its soft glow felt peaceful on this fall morning. When I let Lenny back inside, he immediately ran to the tree.

He’s seen it every day, but this was the first time it was turned on. He’s a smart dog and notices when anything has been moved. He doesn’t always appreciate change. If my exercise ball shows up in a different place, he’ll spend five minutes growling at it to make sure it doesn’t spontaneously move again.

But today, he just took in the light. He stared at it for a minute without barking (which is an eternity for his puppy energy). He seemed to be soaking it up.

If you’ve followed me for a while, you know that Lenny teaches me more than I teach him. Most animals guide me in some way.

And this time, he reminded me to focus on what lights me up. To seek those places of connection, joy, and peace. To extend compassion, kindness, and understanding. It’s a simple reminder, but one that’s easy to forget when you’re dealing with work and life responsibilities.

It’s been quite a year. There are so many things vying for your attention, both personally and professionally. And so much of what we’re surrounded by is filled with fear, anger, and heartbreak.

Knowing what’s happening in the world is important. But beyond all that, there’s knowing what lights you up and having the courage to seek it, even when everyone else might be telling you otherwise. That’s part of intentional leadership, too. Recognizing what’s competing for your attention and deciding where your energy will make the greatest difference.

Where will you put your energy and focus today? What brings you joy, peace, and love? Every day you have a choice. Choose wisely.

Where you put your attention shapes how you lead, make decisions, and move forward. If you’re ready to be more intentional about what’s next, let’s talk.
