How are you feeling about the world right now? Things are moving fast. Whether you feel aligned with the direction of change or are struggling to keep up, there’s no denying the pace feels staggering.

And while change is constant, your mind doesn’t always welcome it. There’s a sense of safety that comes from predictability. When that disappears, it can feel like you’ve lost your footing. What once felt steady suddenly feels uncertain. And that’s often where fear begins to creep in.

For leaders, that fear doesn’t always show up loudly. It can look like hesitation, overthinking, or sticking with what’s familiar, even when you know something needs to shift.

Fear has a way of shrinking your world. It keeps you playing small. It nudges you toward the same safe decisions. And over time, it limits your ability to think creatively, exactly when creativity is needed most.

What If Creativity Is the Antidote to Fear?

There are countless conversations about how fear blocks creativity. But what if the opposite is also true? What if creativity is one of the most powerful ways to move through fear?

Researcher and author Brené Brown suggests that creativity isn’t optional; it’s essential to who we are. When we ignore that part of ourselves, it doesn’t just disappear. It shows up in other ways: stress, frustration, judgment, and even burnout.

“Unused creativity is not benign, it metastasizes. It turns into grief, rage, judgment, sorrow, shame. We are divine beings. And we are, by nature, creative” (Brene Brown).

So, if you’re feeling overwhelmed, uncertain, or stuck… it might not be a strategy problem. It might be a creativity problem.

Small Acts of Creativity Can Shift Everything

This isn’t about producing something perfect or impressive. It’s about getting back into the energy of creating. That can look surprisingly simple:

  • Trying a new recipe
  • Building a fort with your kids (or honestly… by yourself)
  • Doodling with colored pencils
  • Fixing something around the house
  • Buying flowers and arranging them just because
  • Taking photos of ordinary things from unusual angles
  • Journaling your thoughts without filtering them
  • Playing music or making your own instruments out of whatever’s nearby
  • Singing or dancing to your favorite song (bonus points if you do both)

Some of these might feel a little silly. That’s kind of the point. Because in those moments, you’re no longer stuck in fear. You’re creating. And that shift, however small, begins to open things up again.

Why This Matters for Leaders

When you allow yourself to access creativity, something subtle but powerful happens. Your focus shifts. Instead of asking, “How do I control what’s happening?” You begin to ask, “What can I create from here?” That’s where new ideas come from. It’s the same place where innovation lives. And that is how forward movement begins.

If you’re leading a team, your energy matters.

If your team feels overwhelmed or stuck, consider how you might create space for them to think differently. What conversations, activities, or environments could help them reconnect with their own creativity? Because creativity doesn’t just inspire… it realigns.

Where Executive Coaching Comes In

This is often the turning point for many leaders. When everything feels uncertain, it’s hard to see clearly from inside the day-to-day demands of running a business. Patterns are harder to recognize. Options feel limited.

That’s where executive coaching can make a meaningful difference. As an executive coach based in Omaha, I work with business owners and leaders to step outside the noise and see their business from a new perspective.

And when that shift happens, things start to change. The roots of challenges become clearer. New possibilities begin to emerge. What once felt chaotic starts to organize itself into something more manageable and more intentional. Clarity replaces overwhelm. Vision replaces uncertainty. Teams begin to align.

A Different Way Forward

If the pace of change has you feeling unsettled, you’re not alone. But you’re also not stuck. Sometimes the way forward isn’t about pushing harder or finding the perfect strategy. Sometimes it starts with something much simpler: Creating.

So here’s a question to sit with: How might creativity help you turn the tables on fear – both for yourself and your business?

Ready to see your business differently?

As an executive coach, my role is to help owners and executives gain a new perspective of their business. I love the clarity that comes when clients view things differently. The roots of problems start to materialize, as does the way around them. Order starts to emerge out of chaos. Clear visions crystallize, and teams become aligned with a common purpose.
